GREEN LEGIONNAIRES & PHILS FEVER,

Real fast before we go into anything else, the trip to D.C. is closed!  We sold out Monday night around 1 AM with 1,400 people heading to D.C. for the season opener!  I am glad so many of you took us up on the offer of our package at cost and hopefully we will start the season off with a big victory!!

It’s time once again for the annual STATE OF THE LEGION ADDRESS!  Many of you have come to love the content of this, as it is my “in-depth” look at the season past for both the Eagles and Phillies, and the season moving forward for both!  There will be some emotion in the beginning and some tough love for one of the two organizations.  I will speak my mind and will table the discussion for any and all commentary on our message board, as we want to hear what YOU have to say as well.  There will be three sections of the STATE OF THE LEGION ADDRESS, the first being what is going on with us, the second being the Eagles, and finally, the Phillies.  Remember people that while I still speak many truths, this email is intended for entertainment and should be viewed and read as such.

Without further intro, here we go!!............

Well, another season has come and gone.  Before I go into anything, I just want to take a moment and thank all of you for the best year we have ever had here at The Legion.  Your support has allowed me to continue to do what I still love to do although I am sure most of you noticed, my head wasn't totally in it this year with my mother falling ill and passing away.  My battery will recharge in the off-season and I'll be ready again for next year.  Once again, I do want to thank all of you who reached out to me in any way and were there for me in my time of need.  I don’t believe I would have been able to deal with it as well if many of you weren’t there for me.  I am very lucky to call many of you my friends and even more so, being able to call many of you my family at this point.  I know some of you are going through similar situations and like I said a couple months ago, if you need me for anything, I am here for you.  It’s what you do for family and the least I can do for all of you.

In addition to that, your support has allowed for my best friend, Marilyn Minda, to be employed yet again for another year, and has also allowed for us to employ Alex Baxter and Chad Gingrich full-time as a couple of bright kids coming out of school into a very poor job market.  All of us here at The Legion thank you in ways that will never be expressed by just words alone.  I do hope all of you know how truly humbled I am when you say the things you do about us and express your gratitude.  The last month has been very reflective for me as you probably realize.  As my family lost one of its pillars, The Green Legion family continues to grow and I really think we are onto something here, perhaps bigger than all of us may realize at this point.  I am not sure how just yet, but in the off-season, we are going to try to enhance ways for more of you to get to know each other.  I know the types of friendships that have been forged through our world and I would love nothing more than to see that aspect become larger.  I would also love to see some more networking amongst our members.  There are plenty of you who have goods, services, or talent to offer, and we are going to try and find ways to open up more lines of communication.

And of course, we are still going to set up the best trips we possibly can.  I am actually very excited about next year's schedule.  I know we were in Chicago the last two years, but you can't beat that as a destination.  We are in Chicago at least once a year with the Phillies and I love it every time.  You also can't beat San Francisco as a destination.  This gives all of you who haven't been to either of these cities a chance to go and I promise you ZERO disappointment in these destinations.  Jacksonville is also on the list as many of us have unfinished business there!  Last time I was in the stadium, I wasn’t very happy with the results.  Finally, Tennessee is on the list and I can't tell you how much fun that trip will be.  The city that our Legion friend and family member Lance Umble likes to refer to as NASHVEGAS!!  Pretty sure I already have a little surprise in store for you on this trip depending on the date.

One other quick note, John Clayton from ESPN reported last week that everyone is so far apart on labor negotiations for 2011 so much so that he said a lockout is almost inevitable.  This means two things, the first being if you want your road trip fix, you may want to find interest in one of these four destinations I just told you about.  The other is cross your fingers because if there is a lockout, the 2011 season goes right down the crapper and it could be the best season for road trips with Arizona, MIAMI, and the record equivalent of the NFC South...did I mention MIAMI!!!  Get your S*#T together you guys!!

TicketZeus.com is also on the list of things to discuss.  We want to be your portal for Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, concert tickets, etc.  We are currently developing a way to in essence Stub Hub your tickets, without costing you as much as it would if you went through them and keeping it in the Philadelphia region so we don’t wind up with more Mets fans in Citizen’s Bank Park or more stinkin’ Cowboys fans at The Linc.  We will keep you posted on that!

All in all, from The Legion standpoint, it was a great year.  We have many more things in store for you in the upcoming months and we are jumping out of our skin to let some of these things out, and will start making announcements as soon as possible.  So, let’s start with the bashing and then end on a high note.  In other words, we start with the Eagles and end with the Phillies!

I will try not to be repetitive, but hopefully if people in the right place hear this enough, then maybe certain begs and pleads will no longer fall on deaf ears.  IT’S TIME FOR CHANGE!!  I don’t know what else to say.  This stems from two remarkably obvious situations, and I’m pretty tired of both.  The first being our quarterback and in no way shape or form second, our coach.

Look, Mr. Lurie, I have to show you major respect this time around because you did in fact recognize our efforts this year as far as your fans traveling to see this team.  The letter I received was great and I thank you and Joe for it.  However, there is a substantial problem when your fans seem to show up more than your coach and quarterback.  Let’s start with #5 and then we’ll move onto Mr. Stubborn.

Top 10 reasons why Donovan should NOT be quarterbacking this team next year:

10.  I would LOVE to see what our receiver corps can do with a quarterback that can throw to them in stride!
9.  HE’S NOT AN ACCURATE PASSER!  To try and defend him here is simply silly.
8.  He is no longer the mobile quarterback he once was thereby taking away an element of his game.
7.  I believe his “edge” is no longer there if it ever existed before.
6.  He is slotted to make an ENORMOUS amount of money this year that could be used to sign people like Leonard Weaver!
5.  If you keep him this year, you will get ZERO trade value next year as he is a free agent!
4.  11 years!  It hasn’t worked in 11 years.  If I knew I would have that kind of job security with an organization, I would have started taking steroids at age 14!!
3.  Kevin Kolb is also a free agent after this year and has played in 12 total games and only started in 2.  So far, you’ve wasted a draft pick on someone who was supposed to be the next coming of Jesus, and we don’t know what he can do, AND NOTHING CAN BE AS BAD AS DONOVAN IN PRESSURE GAMES THESE DAYS!
2.  I’m tired of seeing a smile at the line of scrimmage followed by a pass in the dirt!
1.  During the Pro Bowl weekend in Miami, he was doing the same stupid guitar-hero impression at the Clevelander that he did before the Dallas playoff game where it was obvious, it did nothing to fire him up mentally!  Yeah, you didn’t know I was there, did ya’ Donny?!  Maybe it would have been obvious by my EAGLES HAT I was wearing!
Again, Donovan, I thank you for what you did for us in the past.  I know the argument can be made that you had no one to throw to for a while, but when you did, you still came up short.  It’s just time to rethink and retool and no offense, but you aren’t in the mix.

But now here is the worst part and what I truly believe now is our Achilles’ heel.  I don’t know how you can be a Reid supporter at this point if you still are.  Here are the top ten reasons why I believe he should no longer be the coach:

10.  He’s a “paper” coach.  Your little blackjack cheat card doesn’t work on game days.  You need to coach every play as it happens and quit scripting plays!
9.  Adjustments…HE DOESN’T MAKE ANY!
8.  Clock management…HE DOESN’T POSSESS THAT SIDE OF THE BRAIN!
7.  Play calling…HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF A BALANCED OFFENSE!?
6.  Attitude towards the media.. I’m sorry, but I WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU’RE THINKING!!
5.  Attitude towards fans…Does it seem like he couldn’t care what we think about anything?!
4.  Philosophy…West Coast Offense is dead!  Start from the trenches and move your way out?  Then why has Trent Cole never had someone on the other side to help him?  Give an NFL quarterback 5 seconds to throw the ball and you will go 9 and 7 and lose in the first round of the playoffs!
3.  11 years!  It hasn’t worked in 11 years.  If I knew I would have that kind of job security with an organization, I would have started taking steroids at age 14!!  Can I say that here again?
2.  “I TOLD YOU SO!”  It is obvious to me that you continue to revert back to your pass first, lop-sided offense during the playoffs because you just want to throw it back at us.  There can be no other reason and if it’s because you honestly believe in it, then you need to go.
1.  BROKEN RECORD…You keep saying you will “fix it.”  You haven’t and I don’t think you can.
Does anyone feel the same way here?  I understand a sense of loyalty Jeffrey.  I really do.  HOWEVER, as the owner of a billion dollar organization which has what you would sort of call shareholders, don't you think it's time you start making some fan friendly decisions.  I don't care what the inside of your organization feels, the majority of this fan base is simply tired of Andy Reid, his defiant attitude with the media, and his inability to grow with the way the NFL grows.  For the first time, I think you have a hell of a good receiver corps.  I just don't think you have a quarterback that can put the ball in a spot.  You continue to ignore the linebacker position (Stewart Bradley excluded) after Joe Jurevicius runs right past Levon Kirkland.  You claim the game is won in the trenches but you only ever signed one decent free agent at the defensive end position.  On "paper," your O line looked pretty good but someone in the organization HAD to know the Andrews brothers had shockingly scary qualities resembling those of Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunn!!  I think you have missed your window and it's time to start over.  I'm not going to go into what I think is inherently wrong with YOUR philosophy, or maybe I will.  After you lost the Super Bowl in 2005 (2004 season), did you bother to try and get better?  Matter of fact, I think your only free-agent signing of a player that wasn't on the roster the season before was Mike McMahon.  2006 your big signing was Darren Howard!  You released Terrell Owens and replaced his talent with a trade for Donte Stallworth.  When you realized Stallworth wasn't going to fill T.O.'s shoes, you signed the unbelievable reliable and always healthy, Kevin Curtis.  BUT, it gets better...if that wasn't enough for the headlines, you did sign SAV ROCCA!!  Again, another example of your head coach trying to outthink the world!

I love being an Eagles fan for possibly the same reason as Andy Reid.  One day I really want to say I TOLD YOU SO to every a$$hole Cowboys, Giants, and Redskins fan I have had to put up with in my 39 years.  I believe you were a class act organization with one character flaw on your record and that was the signing of Michael Vick.  Perhaps it was part of the plan to have him as trade bait this year, but what he did STILL doesn’t sit well with me.  Matter of fact, here is something I have been saving for a rainy day:

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/pets/More_graphic_details_emerge_about_Vicks_dog_fighting_ring.html

To all you Vick supporters out there, well, I still don’t know how you can, as a human being, support this guy if these allegations are accurate.

I don’t know if it’s in the cards or not, but I always thought winning the Super Bowl was the ultimate goal and maybe you have more money than most of us will ever know, but if that scumbag Benson, who is nothing short of a used car salesman and has acted like it for years, can win a Super Bowl and have an entire city worship him for the rest of his life, isn’t this something you want as well??!!  Have you ever bothered to watch Varsity Blues?  Step up and be the hero already!!  You are a class act with one fault on your record and that being the Vick signing (in my opinion).  For GOD SAKE BROTHER, do it already!!  You bought this team for 150 million back in the mid 90’s and it is worth over a billion today.  Are we asking too much?  Joe gets on talk radio and television and says you feel like you can win with what you have.  If 9 and 7 is what you are talking about, then he isn’t lying.  If a Super bowl is what you are talking about, THEN ALL OF YOU HAVE BEEN WRONG FOR A LONG TIME NOW AND IT’S TIME FOR CHANGE!!  I think we have spent enough emotion, time, and money with you to finally get a little of what we have been asking for.

You might be able to learn a little from the Phillies and that is what we are going to talk about now!

If you aren’t excited about the Phils this year, someone needs to put a mirror under your nose!  I know it would have been nice to beat the Yanks last year, but I believe we did get beat by a better team.  I don’t know after losing Damon and Matsui this year if the Yanks will be the same, but their pitching staff will remain and that is a hard combination to beat up.  I do think however, that the Phils have placed themselves in a position where they are going to make a serious run at another title over the next 3 years.

Allow me now to try and make more sense of this Cliff Lee/Roy Halladay situation that many of you got upset about.  We all know it has been the Phillies position to not overpay for players.  If Lee had another season this year like he did last year, he would command a HUGE dollar amount when he became a free agent after this season.  I know everyone wanted both, but you don’t get Halladay without Lee in this deal and you now have a legitimate number 1 at the start of your rotation for the next FOUR YEARS!!  Plus, he’s a right-hander and the most dominant pitcher in the toughest division in baseball for a few years running now.  It balances your rotation, and I can see the Phillies going after him specifically to handle people like Rodriguez who they know they will only face in the World Series!  It’s a chess game now as they are confident they will be there and they are moving their pieces into position.  It’s exciting as hell and WHAT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO WHEN YOU KNOW YOU ARE FINALLY IN A POSITION TO WIN IT ALL…YOU GET EVEN BETTER!!

Would I have wanted both on the roster?!  Of course I would…what jacka$$ wouldn’t?!  I just don’t think it was possible and in addition to that, as much as I would have liked to have seen Kyle Drabek move on up, I am fine with them FINALLY giving up a prospect to get what they got.  If this was the Ed Wade school of thinking, nothing on the planet would have been worth more than a prospect like this.

And where I did think Pedro was a solid third baseman, WELCOME BACK PLACIDO POLANCO!!  Are you kidding me?!  This move is AWESOME unless J-Roll continues to argue for his leadoff position.  Polanco is and should be your legitimate lead-off batter.  It makes your line-up a SERIOUS force to be reckoned with as he will take and foul off 10 or 12 pitches so that everyone else in the line-up can see what the opposing pitcher has in store that day.  I love it.  So what does that make your line-up look like now?  Maybe this:

Polanco
Victorino
Utley
Howard
Werth
Ibanez/Rollins
Rollins/Ibanez
Ruiz
Halladay
I don’t know, but I think I’m good with J-Roll hitting the tail-end of the line-up here and he can swing for the fence anytime he wants!!

Either way, exciting as hell!  Also, I think this move for Halladay puts Hamels in a better mind-set.  I justify that with a couple of statements.  I think it’s obvious that Lee put a little pressure on Hamels because I think Cole really believed he was their ace last year.  This will be quickly put to rest knowing what Halladay has done in the past few years.  Also, he is STARTING the season with the Phillies as opposed to coming in during the middle of the season.  There should be at least a friendship developed through Spring Training and into the course of the season.

As far as the rest of the pitching staff goes, I still believe we need some middle relief help, but I’m hoping we can compensate with a 5-run cushion on everyone before that pitcher even gets a call from the dugout!  Lidge?  I don’t know.  We’ll see.  That is probably the real X-factor going into the season right now!

In summation, I love what the Phillies are doing and I hate what the Eagles AREN’T doing.  Of course, I am not a football expert, but I do know you are going to lose EVERY pressure game with an inaccurate quarterback, lack of time of possession because you refuse to run the ball more than ten times, and no legitimate pressure on the quarterback.  Mark Schlereth said it best a few weeks ago before the Dallas playoff game when he stated that the Cowboys were going to win because the Eagles need to blitz to get pressure on Romo and the Cowboys front line can do it on their own.

And here is the statement that is going to make me taste breakfast all over again.  It pains me to say, but the Cowboys are a better team than the Eagles right now even with Romo.  I don’t know who gets the nod for bigger flake during a pressure game between McNabb and Romo, but it seems that at least Romo is progressing while McNabb is making a u-turn.  And if that statement isn’t enough to make you feel like a mother bird coming back to the nest, how’s this one make you feel??  Anthony Spencer looked pretty good, didn't he?  Anyone want to tell me the significance of that one?  Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Cowboys take him in the first round with a pick that WE traded to them for their second round pick in order to take, umm, Kevin Kolb?!!!!

I don’t know people, I’m just saying!!

Talk to all of you soon and thank you once again for your unwavering support of The Green Legion!!  We would LOVE TO HEAR ALL OF YOUR THOUGHTS BY CLICKING HERE and talking about this on our message board!!  Lots of things up for debate and since I know I am only one person, convince me I’m wrong or agree with me about anything we talked about or haven’t.  We want to know what everyone thinks!!

Hmmmm, easy to place the blame strictly on the QB and Coach isn't it Quimby? I know this is just for entertainment, but your opinion of what is "wrong" with the team is entertaining in itself. I know you don't have enough time to type out all that is wrong with this team...but the QB and coach are problems number #9 and #10 on the list.

It is easy to blame the coach and quaterback but in this case I feel it is justified.  I would love to hear what you think problems 1-8 are

Taint, I have no problem here being considered wrong although in this respect, I don't know if any problems being pointed out are actually wrong.  This team has a lot of them right now.  Just bring something more to the table than problems #9 and #10.

I agree with Alex...what are problems 1-8?  You took the time to create an account.  Speak your mind.

Unfortunately, Fatman isn't going anywhere hence the contract extension. We will need to navigate around that problem for at least a few more years. Trade wormburner and dogkilla for a second and a fifth respectively and we will be on the right track!

Quimby I couldn't agree with you more. I have been off the Reid/McNabb bandwagon for years now. Especially when it became quite apparent to me that 5 was not going to get us a SuperBowl Championship. I am not and really never have been a Donovan fan but seriously at this point, I would rather see Andy go! I know that they resigned him mid-season because he makes them a large sum of money. However, it makes no sense to us, the fans that pay his salary to see the same thing year after year and now know that we can look forward to 3 more years of this nonsense! Yes, you can say that there are many reasons that this team hasn't gotten it done but the one constant that has been holding us back is the 2-headed monster; Reid/McNabb.......

GO PHILS!!!! :D

Quimby -

I know you are calling for McNabb to be ousted from the QB position, but have we really seen enough of Kolb to say he is a better choice? I mean, I know Donovan comes up short, often times in key situations, but it's not like he is playing at the Stafford level so I have a hard time calling for his head.

I guess change is good sometimes, so I wouldn't mind seeing AR hit the road. I think a new change of pace in the locker room and team meetings might do the team good.

And for your comment regarding Cowboyws being better...defensively they've proven they rule. We need to fix our Defense and not depend on young, inexperienced guys to fill the voids some of our veteran players left behind.

Quimby,

Once again your "State of the Legion Address" is rock solid and right on point! I really hope in 20 to 25 years you will write a book titled...

The State of the Legion - 25 Years, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.... or something along those lines.

I have been on one trip so far with the Legion (New Orleans '06) and hope to get on quite a few more, I must say I admire what you do for us Eagles fans.

Keep up the GREAT work!

While I have issues with Andy Reid's play calling/conservative nature...

How can you argue with results?  Yes, we haven't won a Super Bowl, but I honestly enjoy watching the team now.  People bitch and moan about Andy, but who remembers when Rich Kotite was coach?

You'd rather trade Andy Reid for Rich Kotite?  Or how about Ray Rhodes?  Mike McCormack?  Ed Khayat?  Jerry Williams?  Joe Kuharich?  Should I even continue this list?  Sure Rhodes had 2 decent years...but anyone remember the last 2?  1998 we went 3-13 and 1997 we went 6-9-1.  Sounds real exciting to me...

BTW...Reid has the highest winning percentage of ANY EAGLES COACH IN THE HISTORY OF THE TEAM SINCE 1933.

ANY

The problem is people have become accustomed to the fact that we should win.  Enjoy it while it lasts...eventually we'll see more stellar 3-13 seasons.  When we get a new head coach then we'll see who wishes Andy was still around.
